Honorary doctorate awarded to Kip Thorne
On this year's ETH Day, Kip Thorne — one of the 2017 Physics Nobel laureates — has been awared a honorary doctorate of ETH Zurich, at the request of the Department of Physics.
Together with guests from research, politics, and industry, ETH Zurich celebrated on 18 November 2017 its 162nd anniversary with the 2017 ETH Day, its academic holiday. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of honorary doctorates to five outstanding researchers, among them Kip Thorne (Caltech), one of this year's Nobel laureates in Physics, who was appointed at the request of the Department of Physics.
An extraordinary Zurich Physics Colloquium
Special Physics Colloquium with Kip Thorne
On the day before the ceremony, Kip Thorne visited the Department and gave a special talk in the Zurich Physics Colloquium. Delighted both to have an opportunity to give a 'physics talk' about his research and to do so at the birthplace of General Relativity, Albert Einstein's theory that underpins much of the Thorne's opus, he gave a broad overview over his work on geometrodyamics, in front of a fully packed auditorium. The talk was followed by a similarly well-attended reception, which provided an opportunity to meet the Nobel laureate, have books signed and to snap photos with him.
