Congratulations to all graduates
Some 200 guests celebrated 77 successful graduates at the Master's degree graduation ceremony 2018 of the Department of Physics. Three graduates were awarded the ETH Silver Medal for their outstanding Master's theses. Stephan Allenspach received in addition the Willi Studer Prize for this year's best student of the physics Master's degree programme.
Director of Studies Prof. Manfred Sigrist and Head of Department Prof. Rainer Wallny welcomed some 200 guests in the Auditorium Maximum of the ETH main building.
In her commemorative speech, Prof. Felicitas Pauss discussed how the search for a path to one's goals can sometimes lead to a dead end. She asked the graduates, and with them the other guests, to close their eyes and to remember a person who had a decisive influence during their studies — followed by a call to follow the example of these persons and to similarly enrich the lives of others.
Then, one of the new graduates, Alexander Bohn, looked back on his time at ETH, on what drove and motivated him, and on many an amusing anecdote during his studies.
Finally, the graduates of the Department of Physics received their certificates. In addition, three graduates were awarded the Silver Medal of ETH Zurich for their outstanding Master's theses:
- Stephan Allenspach for his Master's thesis "The Spin Hamiltonian of the Spin Dimer System BaCuSi2O6 studied by Neutro Spectroscopy" under the supervision of Prof. Joël Mesot;
- Johan Runeson for his Master's thesis "An enhanced sampling approach to the simulation of electrons in quantum dots" under the supervision of Prof. Michele Parrinello; and
- Nick Sauerwein for his Master's thesis "Beam Characterization of Low Energy Electrons from a Laser Wakefield Accelerator" under the supervision of Dr. Andreas Adelmann.
Stephan Allenspach was also awarded the Willi Studer Prize for the best graduate of this year's Master's degree programme in physics.
Musical accompaniment for the event was provided by the Duo Lumbago.
