A latecomer to astronomical research
Particle Physics (IPA)
Already as a boy, Rudolf Bär was fascinated by astronomy. After graduating from ETH, however, he opted for a career in banking. Only after his retirement did he reach for the stars. In its latest issue, ETH Globe tells the story of the latecomer, who works now in the group of Kevin Schawinski.
His grandfather was Julius Bär, founder of the private bank carrying that name, his aunt was married to the mathematician Hermann Weyl, and the physic Nobel laureate Wolfgang Pauli was a friend of his parents who sometimes came for dinner.
Following a career in banking, Rudolf Bär decided to take up a fresh challenge and found a scientific home in the group of ETH astrophysicist Kevin Schawinski (Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics).
