Experiencing modern research
- Laboratory for Solid State Physics (LFKP)
- Particle Physics (IPA)
20 high-school students with a passion for physics had a chance to experience modern research in two large laboratory complexes of the Department of Physics. In the Laboratory for Solid State Physics, they visted the Advanced Semiconductor Quantum Materials group, and in the Institute for Particle Physics the Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics.
Physics Week "Pro IYPT-CH"
During the 'Physics Week', ETH professor Werner Wegscheider gave an overview over the education and research at the Department of Physics. A morning full of experiments and exciting direct contacts with scientists conducting research in the labs served to motivate exchange and discussion.
The Physics Week was organized by the association "Pro IYPT-CH" at the Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Gymnasium Rämibühl in Zurich. With a wide range of activities, the students involved in the association prepare pupils, independently from their school, for the Swiss Young Physicists' Tournament (SYPT), which took place this year in mid-March at the EPFL in Lausanne. The nine top pupils now have a chance to qualify for the Swiss team going to the International Young Physicists' Tournament (IYPT) in Singapore (5–12 July 2017).
The SYPT is a national competition for physics enthusiasts from all over Switzerland. At the tournament, a small research project realized in the preparatory phase is presented and defended.
