ETH apprentices at the Zurich job fair
The Department of Physics of ETH Zurich trains electronics, physics-lab and IT technicians as well as designers and polymechanics. Later on, these often provide important support for basic research or take up positions in industry. At the Zurich job fair (Berufsmesse Zürich), apprentices from the Department of Physics presented their apprenticeship to other youngsters and to parents.
ETH Zurich trains about 170 apprentices. Youngsters and parents are often surprised to see ETH Zurich at the job fair, alongside Novartis, Swiss, Holzbau Schweiz, Zürcher Kantonalbank and many other exhibitors.
At the Zurich job fair, all apprenticeships offered at ETH were presented at an own booth, organized by Fabienne Jaquet (Human Resources of ETH Zurich). Apprentices from the Department of Physics introduced experiments from their "Travelling Circus", a collection of mobile experiments that apprentices have constructed during their courses.
In this way, they could directly demonstrate to visitors the challenges involved in an apprenticeship at the Department of Physics. Interesting experiments, together with the explanations provided, gave the audience many light-bulb moments. This in turn motivated the ETH apprentices in their task of providing insights into their education.
