Department Management and Administration
The Head of the Department of Physics represents the department towards the Executive Board of ETH, other ETH departments, and the general public.
The Deputy Head deputises for the Head of the Department in his absence.
The Director of Studies is responsible for the physics curriculum and manages the doctoral studies.
The Department Coordinator leads the departmental services.
The Strategy Commission is responsible for department-wide planning. In particular, it submits to the Departmental Conference proposals for planning professorships, participates in planning study programmes, and advises the Director of Studies in developing the doctoral programme.
The Departmental Secretariat assists the Head of Department, the Department Coordinator, and Departmental Services in their daily adminstrative business. It is responsible for the administrative organisation of habilitations and departmental appointments and administrative matters of Services staff. The Secretariat also serves as the contact point for ETH Zurich central bodies and D-PHYS staff.
The Study Coordinator works with the Director of Studies on the design and development of the teaching courses and provides information and advice to students.

One of the key aspects in controlling is the preparation, monitoring and coordination of the yearly budgeting process. The creation of periodic reports informing about the financial status, consulting, and improving transparency are part of this post's mission as well. Another task is the screening of internal and external processes, suggesting improvements where necessary. Controlling is an important financial interface to the school administration, the financial division, and to human resources. Controlling also supports the secretarial offices of the department and is a provider of need-oriented services.

The main tasks of accounting and purchasing are the procurement and billing of materials and services to institutes, professorships and companies, the administration and reporting of D-PHYS Services, as well as the management of the D-PHYS shop and central purchasing for the D-PHYS Services. The coordination of WTO procurement and export risk transactions and the maintenance of databases for internal billing, the online catalog, the Vademecum and the D-PHYS telephone directory are also responsibilities of this position.
