Visit from Greece on the Hönggerberg
- Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITP)
- Institute for Quantum Electronics (IQE)
Not only Swiss Cantonal Schools, but also the 14th General Lyceum of Thessaloniki and the Psychiko College High School visited the Department of Physics in recent weeks. 77 high school students were guided by students across the Hönggerberg campus and took part in various, tailored programmes. Or they explored the campus by themselves using maps.
Is there life out there?
Professor Hans Martin Schmid talked about star and planet formation: Is there life out there? And using which means is this question being explored today? The presentation of Anastasiou Charalampos, in Greek, on the Swiss education system and research at the Institute for Theoretical Physics has also attracted great interest. After the visit to CERN, the group from Psychiko visited the Quantum Photonics Laboratory at the Department of Physics of ETH Zurich. With his enthusiastic explanations in midst of experimental equipment in their research laboratory, Senior Scientist Dr. Martin Kroner gave the young visitors immediate insight into everyday life in research. Even if in the background tired faces could be seen from time to time, after a long day's programme, many questions were asked and lively discussions had about the presentations.
Also the weather played its part
Not only were the presentations inspiring, also the weather played its part. The group, lucky enough to see Zurich in best weather, would have gladly postponed their departure. Whether this was also the case for the first group, which was so to speak standing on the Hönggerberg in ice-cold wind, remains open. In any case, the group was impressed by the orderliness and smooth organization on campus. As is often the case after such guided tours, some students wish to complete their Master studies at ETH Zurich. Who knows, maybe the sun-plessed visitors from Greece will one day look through the window of their apartment to the wintry Zurich and ask themselves: Is there life out there?
