Department Day 2016
On May 26 2016, the traditional traditional Department Day, open to all members of the department, took place.
Professor Simon Lilly, the new Head of Department, led for the first time through the programme of the Department Day. He informed the department members about key points concerning strategy, areas of research, finance, reflections on succession planning and construction projects.
Then spoke Dr. Adam Amara, Senior Scientist at the Institute for Astronomy, and Prof. Rainer Wallny of the Institute for Particle Physics on current research in the department, namely on "Fundamental Dark Mysteries of the Universe". Researchers both at the Institute for Astronomy and the Institute for Particle Physics work on these topics, and their findings and results complement each other "like ying and yang". Those who know to do research in the network that interlinks disciplines can make fundamental discoveries, in particular in the areas of Dark Matter and Dark Energy. These account for approximately 27% of all matter and 68% of all energy in the observable Universe, but are still largely unexplored.
The common lunch on the campus grounds offered then the opportunity for chats across groups and institutes.
