Research Activities
For the past two decades I have been heavily involved in the design, development and calibration of infrared instruments for the word's largest telescopes, both on ground and in space. The fascination of astronomical instrumentation comes from the fundamental science questions that require dedicated measurements and therefore specific instruments. To do so, a very broad multi-disciplanery understanding is required that connects questions about the "stars" to solutions with the "screws". However, my main scientific interest are in the field of exoplanets and together with Sascha Quanz I like to find an answer to the question "Is there life out there, or how unique is our Earth".
I have the priviledge to lead hardware contributions and calibration support to instruments like MIRI/JWST, SPIRE/Herschel, Euclid, ERIS/VLT and now METIS/ELT. I led concept studies for the EChO spectrometer instrument (now Ariel) and ExoMOS. Now, I am acting as the Lead Systems Engineer for the METIS/ELT project and lead the Laboratory for Astronomical Instrumentation in the Exoplanet and Habitability research group. In that role I am leading one of our major in-house projects NICE for LIFE.
