MSc High Energy Physics
The High Energy Physics Joint Master Program aims to prepare students for a future research career in High Energy Physics.
As for the general Master in Physics, the external page High Energy Physics Joint Master Program is also an excellent preparation for activities outside academia. In particular, students will learn to solve challenging problems in a very competitive environment. Candidates have to apply to the institution where they intend to spend the first year of the program.
The Master program is organized jointly by Ecole Polytechnique (IP Paris) and ETH Zurich.
This Master program will offer a coherent education in theoretical and experimental High Energy Physics. In addition, specialised courses on various modern areas of High Energy Physics will be offered. The Joint Master program is set up symmetrically between ETH Zurich and Ecole Polytechnique (IP Paris). Students spend one year in Zurich, and one year in Paris. The program is characterised by a structured 120 ECTS curriculum: the first year consists of lectures covering the fundamentals of High Energy Physics, as well as exercises and laboratory work. The second year consists of specialised lecture courses followed by a 6-month Master thesis.
Students can apply to the Joint Master program in High Energy Physics if they hold a university bachelor degree of at least 180 CP or a comparable university degree in physics or in another qualifying academic subject. They must possess at least basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and classical electrodynamics. Only candidates with a good academic record will be admitted. Students admitted to the first year at ETH Zurich who have no prior background in particle physics will be advised to acquire some basic knowledge in particle physics before they begin their studies. Candidates have to apply to the institution where they intend to spend the first year of the program. Admission of all applicants is based on the program requirements.
