National Centres of Competence in Research

The Department of Physics hosts two National Competence Centres in Research (NCCR), a programme of the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Molecular Ultrafast Science and Technology (MUST)

NCCR MUST is an interdisciplinary research program launched in 2010. It brings together 16 Swiss research groups working in Ultrafast Science across the fields of physics and chemistry.

Members of the Department of Physics participate also in the NCCRs SwissMAP and SPIN.

The Mathematics of Physics (SwissMAP)

NCCR SwissMAP is an interdisciplinary research centre at the crossroads of mathematics and theoretical physics, hosted by its leading house, the University of Geneva, and its co-leading house, ETH Zurich. The research network also includes University of Zurich, EPFL, University of Bern, and CERN.

Spin Qubits in Silicon (SPIN)

NCCR SPIN, hosted at the University of Basel, aims to make a major contribution to research into and the development of quantum computers and create the basis for a new information-processing technology.  A total of 19 research group heads are involved: seven from the University of Basel, six from IBM Research – Zurich, four from ETH Zurich, and two from EPF Lausanne.
